Year 5 blog:

Last week, Into University visited year 5. Here is what some of the children had to say when they reflected on their day:

“During Into University, with Jack and Lilli, we learnt about citizenship, which is when you are a legal member of a country, and about being a good citizen. We did a carousel. On the first carousel my team (Team Marcus Rashford) learnt about wants and needs. On the second carousel station, we did a banana split activity which showed us how much each person involved in the banana cycle earns (from farm to shop) . The shop owner, who did the least work, earns the most whereas the people who did the most work earns the least. This links to the Catholic Social Teaching on distributive justice (sharing fairly) and providing an option for the poor.”

“In Into University, we learnt about fair-trade and unfair trade. We also learnt about campaigns and at the end, we campaigned about different categories like better parks, saving bees, and inclusive sports! In my opinion it was fun and I liked the games we played.”

  • Milena

“What I loved about Into University is all the phenomenal activities they introduced and they taught us about different campaigners (Marcus Rashford, Greta Thunberg, and Malala). They showed us why they are famous and what they are trying to do. My most loved activity that we did was the good clap/bad clap game because it was really entertaining and fun to do.”

“I learned that there are thousands of university degrees. We also learned about citizenship and rights. I like that we worked well together in teams to earn points.”

  • Eldho

“My favourite part of Into University was when we did the carousel on wants and needs and how much each worker gets. I liked this because I could learn things I didn’t know while having fun. Another thing I liked is when we did a game for who could do the best clap as it was a fun way to start it.”

  • Arianne

“My favourite part in Into University was talking about things as a group, and presenting to the class. My team was talking about the park and wrote a rap song. I was also able to talk about reducing racism and bullying and I also wrote a song about it. It was a bit cringey to perform but I was glad I wrote it myself and everyone was supportive. I also learnt that everybody has a right  to education, taking part in elections, proper jobs etc.”

  • Sheila

“We had a different activity for each 20 minutes in the morning. In the afternoon, we were making a campaign and presented it to the class.”

  • Kian

“What I enjoyed about Into University is that we made messages and posters about our campaign, like encouraging women to play sports.”

- Alfonso

“WIth Into University, the main focus was citizenship. First, we recapped our last session, which was ‘What is a University?’. One question was: How many courses are there at university? And the answer was 50000. For our first task, we had a carousel. The first one was about democracy and voting and how it works. The second was about Fairtrade, a subject that we have talked about during our Geography lessons, and how much each person is paid. I liked the voting one because we all chose the Blue Party to lead the school. Then, after lunch, we did a campaign about women’s sports. We made a poster, a chant, a speech and a slogan. There were also 3 teams, Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg and Marcus Rashford. I was on Team Greta Thunberg with other children from all three year 5 classes. I have truly enjoyed the experience and I am happy I was part of it.”

  • Zephan

“IntoUniversity was a unique experience. There was a carousel activity which I really enjoyed and a couple of games throughout the day. At the beginning we were split into three teams. Team Malala, Team Rashford and Team Greta Thunberg. All of the teams were representing people that changed the world. Another fun thing was that I made a campaign about different things like ‘Save the bees’. I really recommend attending this.”

  • Daniel

Overall, the children had a fantastic experience and are looking forward to getting to spend a whole week with Into University in Year 6!
