Year 5 blog:
Writing
This term we have just completed our Spy Narrative inspired by “Stormbreaker”. We focused on using dialogue to move the action along and the children have produced some amazing, gripping stories. The main technical skill we were focussing on was punctuating speech accurately and using it to convey characterisation.
Now we are moving onto a non-fiction persuasive advert, encouraging customers to select a tailored holiday experience. We are focusing on the impact of language choices and revisiting features such as: superlatives, alliteration, rhetorical questions, modal verbs, D of 3 and facts to persuade our audience.
Maths
In our geometry unit we have explored different types of angles and learnt how to use a protractor accurately.
We have also applied angle rules to calculate missing angles and categorise polygons. We will be moving on to coordinates, translation and symmetry which will inform our geography learning. In Advancing, we have applied our “sticky knowledge” (key facts) to solve multi-step shape problems such as finding missing angles, using a variety of methods to represent reasoning e.g. bar modelling. Then in Deep activities, we have been comparing and contrasting the properties of shapes to show a detailed understanding in our explanations.
Science
This half term, Year 5 focussed on working scientifically, planning, conducting and reporting the results of a series of experiments based on the learning done since the beginning of the year. Each experiment has been based on a topic previously investigated during the Autumn and Spring terms, such as solubility, friction and sound. Our children had a chance to plan their investigations, identify variables to make sure to conduct a fair test, and record their results, presenting them in a variety of graphs.
Geography
In geography we are developing map reading skills. So far we have compared different types of maps and explored the school grounds while discovering the best way to orientate ourselves. We will be moving on to understanding contour lines and creating a contour model before diving deeper into interpreting OS map symbols and grid references. This will be applied to a real life problem style case study.
RE
We compared the concept of forgiveness in Christianity and Judaism during our other faiths lesson. Our final topic for the year is Sacraments, during which we will be exploring the meaning of vocation and the traditional rituals performed during matrimony and holy orders.
We are looking forward to a fantastic end of the year.
