Satvir Kaur MP Visit:

Today, our incredible team of Reading Ambassadors welcomed Satvir Kaur MP to our school for a very special visit all about reading, libraries, and pupil voice.

Our Reading Ambassadors from across the Learning Federation Partnership of Schools spoke with clarity, passion, and purpose about the importance of reading for pleasure and the vital role that both school and local libraries play in children’s lives. They shared highlights from the many reading initiatives they help to lead, from World Book Day celebrations and Blue Peter Book Club to Extreme Reading competitions, author visits, and even national reading championships!

They also raised awareness of the picture of reading more generally in the city. Children in disadvantaged areas are twice as likely to attend schools without proper library facilities. We are very lucky that all of our schools have a well equipped library and a plethora of books to read, but this is not the case for all children in Southampton. The ambassadors made a powerful case for more support—asking for greater funding for libraries, help making library cards accessible to every child, and even proposed a Southampton Children’s Literacy Festival!

The visit concluded with a tour of Mansel Park's library, as well as an engaging Q&A session, during which Satvir Kaur MP praised the pupils for their thoughtful ideas, self-assurance, and genuine enthusiasm for reading. Hearing about her own journey into politics, our pupils were inspired to see how powerful their voices can be; both individually and collectively in creating change and making a difference. The visit was a powerful reminder that young voices matter, and that reading truly has the power to transform lives. We are so proud of our Reading Ambassadors for representing their schools and local communities so brilliantly.

It was a perfect way to end the academic year and to celebrate everything our Reading Ambassadors have achieved as passionate readers and inspiring ambassadors for literacy across our schools.
