Year R blog:
Dazzling Diwali
This half term, we have jumped straight back into our learning by exploring the festival of light, Diwali! Having listened to the story of Rama and Sita and their escape, the children learnt about how Diwali is celebrated in Hindu households in the United Kingdom and beyond, before having our own Diwali party. The children made Rangoli patterns using colourful rice, created mehndi patterns on cut-out hands and concluded their learning by creating lists for their own party using the sounds they already know. Using their colour mixing skills and different mediums, such as chalk, watercolours, poster paint and crayons, the children were also given the freedom to explore these techniques by creating an image of a Diwali celebration.
In our Science learning, the children explored a selection of malleable materials and their properties, using different tools to make patterns and shapes in playdough, salt dough and clay. Using this knowledge, the children then drew colourful Diva lamps before using clay, alongside sequins and shells to create their own lamps.
Sensational Six!
After finding, forming and saying the number 6, the children were learning how to count 6 objects, building on from their knowledge of the numbers 1 to 5. Can you find one more and one less than the number 6 and identify its position on the numberline? Our year R children can! They even created their own number stories by partitioning 6 cubes using a part-part-whole model.
