Year 6 blog:

Last week Year 6 took part in a wonderful IntoUniversity programme which gave them a real taste of university life and encouraged them to think about their futures.

The week began with the children recapping what they already knew about university and learning more about courses, accommodation and student life. They worked in teams named after inspiring scientists and innovators: Alan Turing, Mae Jemison, Stephen Hawking and Annie Easley. Each group researched their chosen figure and prepared an impressive presentation to share their learning.

As part of their presentations, the children reflected on what they might like to do when they are older. They spoke confidently about possible careers and the types of university courses that could help them achieve their goals. They also thought about what university life might be like, including where they might live and which clubs or societies they might join. It was wonderful to see them thinking ambitiously and expressing their ideas with such enthusiasm.

During the week the groups took on a practical bridge-building challenge, using teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills to design and construct strong and stable structures. There was plenty of excitement as each team tested the strength of their bridge to see whose design was the most effective.

On Tuesday Year 6 visited the SeaCity Museum in Southampton to learn about the story of the Titanic. The children were fascinated by the real-life stories and artefacts on display. They took part in a fact hunt around the exhibits and had the chance to steer the ship, shovel coal and try on outfits similar to those worn by passengers. This hands on experience helped them to understand what life was like for people aboard the Titanic.

The week ended with a memorable visit to the University of Southampton. The children enjoyed a guided tour of the campus, exploring lecture halls, study areas and accommodation. The highlight was presenting their group projects to parents and adults in a real lecture theatre. To finish, they proudly wore graduation gowns and caps to celebrate their achievements, marking the end of an exciting and inspiring week.

Year 6 represented our school brilliantly, showing confidence, teamwork and curiosity throughout. We are incredibly proud of all they achieved during their IntoUniversity experience.
