Science blog:

This half term, the children have been learning all about plants, their different parts, their functions, and how they grow. To explore the factors that affect plant growth, the children designed their own experiment, planting different quantities of seeds in separate pots. Before beginning, we discussed the independent, dependent, and control variables, identifying the importance of keeping the amount of soil, water, and the location of each plant the same to ensure a fair test.

We then took our learning outside, where the children worked collaboratively in groups to carry out their experiment. They thoroughly enjoyed planting the seeds and making predictions about how their plants might grow over time.

To deepen our understanding, we read extracts from our Connecting with Literature text, I Ate Sunshine for Breakfast by Michael Holland, considering what plants need to grow successfully in the coming weeks. Many children impressed us with their prior knowledge, confidently recalling what they had learned in Year 2.

We are excited to observe how our plants develop and are looking forward to seeing cress growing on our windowsills soon!
