Year 1 blog:

Reading

Throughout the year, Year 1 have been sharing many different stories written by some fantastic authors including Julia Donaldson and Sue Hendra. This half term, we have been sharing The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy. Over the half term, we have completed many activities including making predictions, creating emotion graphs and writing book reviews. The Worst Witch has been our favourite story we have shared over the year.

We also had a special visit from Mrs Crawshaw-Prince who is the author of Pip and Pap! We loved hearing about her favourite characters and which  books she enjoyed writing the most. We really enjoyed asking our own questions at the end too!

Year 1 Expo

Year 1 have had a brilliant end to the year with a wonderful Expo! It was a brilliant opportunity for the Year 1 children to share all of their amazing learning with their parents. All of the Year 1’s fantastic publishing books were shared with parents so that they could see all of their hard work throughout the year. As part of the Expo, Year 1 also painted some breath-taking sunset pictures which their parents purchased. The time and effort that Year 1 put into these paintings was absolutely wonderful and the results were outstanding! Well done Year 1!

English

The children in Year 1 have been writing some amazing diary entries about Gerald the giraffe who lives in the jungle with his jungle friends. Gerald was not a good dancer and this made him feel sad and embarrassed but thankfully the cricket taught him how to dance by playing the right music. Gerald showed lots of resilience and determination when he was learning to dance and he succeeded in the end. We have learnt lots from this book about never giving up and always trying our best no matter what! We have also learnt that diaries start with ‘Dear Diary’, use time conjunctions, are written in the first person and often share feelings and reflect on an important experience.

Maths

This half term, we have developed our place value knowledge even further. We have also learnt about money where the children were able to recognise British coins and notes. They were also able to use coins to make different amounts of money. Year 1 have been brilliant at learning to tell the time. We started by using time language such as before, during and after. We have ordered the days of the week and months of the year.  We can now read o’clock and half past on a clock and draw the hands on to show what time it is.

History

In History this term, we have been learning all about The Wright Brothers. They invented the first aeroplane. We learned that they were very resilient and determined as they accepted failure and saw it as a learning curve to progress further with their inventions. We learned about how aeroplanes have evolved over time due to technology advances. Year 1 have really enjoyed their topic on flight and it has been the perfect end to a wonderful year!

Art

In Art this half term our topic has been sculpture. Year 1 enjoyed exploring using the clay and manipulating it in different ways. At first they used their hands and then used clay tools to make different shapes and add textures. Year 1 then worked really hard to create their plan which was a design of their face. We have learnt lots about the proportions of our faces! Our final pieces, where the children made their faces out of clay, are wonderful! Well done Year 1!
