Year 1 Blog:
Maths
Year 1 have had a very exciting start to this half term. The children have taken pride in having their own individual maths books to show their wonderful learning journey. We have been working super hard on our presentation so that our learning looks even more amazing! In lessons, we have been sorting objects and concrete resources into different groups based on their size, shape and colour. We have also been learning to find one more than a number. To do this, we had to use our careful counting skills and our mental maths strategies. We noticed that the numbers got bigger when we counted one more. As well as this, we have been learning all about one less and noticed that the numbers get smaller.
Science
In Science, we have been learning all about the human body. We have learnt that the human body has many parts such as the eyes, ears, mouth, knees, arms and legs. We created our own 'human body recipe' to understand how many of each body part a human has. For example, a human has two eyes and two ears but only one mouth. We then linked this to our senses. We discussed that each part of the human body has a very important function. For example, we use our eyes to see all of God's creations and we use our nose to smell the wonderful nature in our Common Home.
Geography
In Geography, we received a very exciting letter from Pirate Patricia. She was asking for our help to find her treasure. We used our map reading skills to go on a treasure hunt around the school. We found that we need maps when we are lost or when we do not know where we are going. It was a very exciting opportunity for us to look at a variety of different maps. Some of us discussed that our parents use the satellite navigation maps on their phones when they do not know where they are going or if they are lost!
Writing
We have started our Year 1 topic book called 'The Pirates Next Door'. We have enjoyed reading the story and discussing the key adjectives to describe a pirate. We have been working super hard on using nouns and adjectives that we will use to create our own sentences. Our teachers have been reminding us to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces to make our writing even more amazing!
