Year 4 blog:
Year 4 learning this half term.
We have had a wonderfully busy and exciting half term in class, filled with new skills, fascinating facts and creative adventures. Here is a little update on what we have been learning:
Maths – Telling the Time
In maths, we have been diving into the world of clocks! The children have been learning how to tell the time using both analogue and digital clocks. They have worked hard to understand the difference between minutes past and minutes to the hour and have been practising reading and writing times in different formats. It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow with each lesson. We have deepened our understanding by converting between the different formats and 24 hour time too.
Writing – Twisted Fairy Tales
Our writing lessons have taken a magical twist! We have been creating our own twisted fairy tales, where children are taking a traditional fairy tale and changing one aspect of it. The children have been focusing on how to hook the reader with exciting openings and surprising plot developments. We have used the Freytag’s pyramid structure to support the children with planning ideas so that we have an introduction, build up, climax and a resolution. Their imaginations have truly shone and we’ve been so impressed by their creativity and storytelling skills.
Geography – The Importance of Water
This half term in geography, we have been exploring the vital role water plays in our world. From where our water comes from to how it supports life, the children have developed a deeper understanding of why it is so important to protect this precious resource. This builds upon the children’s previous learning on the water cycle. A highlight was learning about the 1854 cholera outbreak in London — children used their map skills to trace how Dr. John Snow tracked the source of the outbreak, linking history, science and geography in a powerful way.
As always, we are incredibly proud of the children’s enthusiasm and hard work. Thank you for your continued support at home — it makes such a difference to their learning!
