Year 5 blog:
Year 5’s Brilliant First Week Back – Bikeability!
What an exciting start to the school year our Year 5 pupils have had! Instead of easing back into the classroom slowly, they jumped straight into something active, practical and full of fun – Bikeability week.
Throughout the week, the children worked with trained instructors to build their confidence on two wheels. For some, it was a chance to polish up their existing cycling skills and even practise riding safely on the roads. For others, it was about going back to basics as new riders – learning how to balance, pedal and get moving independently for the very first time. Everyone made amazing progress and it was wonderful to see their determination, enthusiasm and teamwork shining through.
The sessions began with the essentials: checking bikes and helmets for safety, practising signalling with one hand and learning how to set off and stop smoothly. Those who were ready then moved on to road practice, where they learned to look over their shoulders, judge traffic, understand road signs and position themselves correctly at junctions. Meanwhile, our new riders stayed on the playground to focus on gaining confidence and mastering the joy of riding a bike.
The instructors were full of praise for the children’s focus and sensible approach. They commented on how well Year 5 listened, followed instructions and encouraged one another. By the end of the week, every child had gained not only new cycling skills but also a sense of independence and responsibility.
Well done, Year 5. What a fantastic way to begin the year!
