World Book Day:
On Friday, the Reading Ambassadors and Mrs Harley stood at the front of the assembly and enjoyed watching the children arrive in an incredible range of costumes for our World Book Day. The hall was filled with characters from many books: Harry Potter, Narnia, The Cat in The Hat... it was wonderful to see so many characters brought to life in our school and we would like to thank every adult within our community who made it possible for the children to participate so fully.
During the assembly, the Reading Ambassadors asked children to reflect on hobbies and consider whether reading could be a hobby. The Ambassadors then revealed five pre-recorded masked readers who shared extracts from different texts. Children were challenged to guess both the book and the masked reader. Our pupils’ knowledge and enthusiasm for reading certainly shone through and they managed to guess them all correctly!
Once back in class, the whole school embraced a game of The Traitors. Throughout the day, children completed book-related challenges to earn clues to help them work out which adults were traitors. The challenges included searching for hidden books within pictures, solving pictograms about books and designing creative bookmarks. Our children certainly threw themselves into working together to banish adults throughout the day. Unbeknown to the children, teachers had all been given their secret roles earlier in the week. At the end of the day, The Traitors were finally revealed so that the children could see if their banishments had eliminated any Traitors. They had indeed found two out of four, bringing the game to a close.
In addition to these games and dressing up, the teachers had generously dedicated their own time to decorating their classroom doors, transforming the corridors into a brilliant display of stories and imagination. Each door was unique. At lunchtime, the Reading Ambassadors toured the school to admire the decorated doors more closely. They selected a winner and presented a very prestigious trophy and book-token prize!
World Book Day was a fantastic celebration of reading, imagination and community spirit. A huge thank you to everyone for embracing the day with such enthusiasm. The children have been challenged to look out for traitors in the books they read throughout the rest of the year. Reading is the key to learning and if we can make reading a hobby, we can unlock so many more opportunities to learn and grow.
