Year 4 blog:
Adventures in Storytelling
Our writing focus this half term has been inspired by Aaron Becker’s wordless picture books: 'Journey', 'Quest' and 'The Last Zookeeper'. We have been crafting our own narratives using Freytag’s Pyramid, ensuring our stories have a clear structure with an exciting climax and resolution. Through these imaginative tales, we have developed descriptive language, strong character development and engaging plot twists.
Vikings – Warriors or Settlers?
So far this half term, we have explored the fascinating world of the Vikings, analysing sources to determine whether they were brutal savages or peaceful settlers. We examined evidence from historical accounts, artifacts and archaeological findings to form our own conclusions. Additionally, we studied the impressive craftsmanship of Viking boats and their significance in exploration and warfare. Our journey also took us to key Viking sites like Lindisfarne, where the famous raid took place, and Jorvik, a major Viking settlement in England.
The Wonders of Sound
In Science, we have delved into the world of sound, learning about how it travels through different materials. We have explored the parts of the ear and their functions, understanding how we perceive sound. Our investigations covered pitch and volume, with fun experiments to see how different sounds are produced and altered. Did you know that sound travels faster through solids than air? We tested this in class and were amazed by the results!
Sharing the Light
In R.E., we have been focusing on the role of Angels as Messengers in the Christmas story. We discussed how we can spread positive messages in our own lives. Our learning also included studying how Jesus was revealed as the Messiah and the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, exploring the theme of Jesus as the Light of the World. To complement our reflections, we listened to Rend Collective’s song 'My Lighthouse', thinking about how light guides and protects us.
