Year 5 blog:

Year 5 have started the year off as they mean to go on! We have been studying the poem The Dreadful Menace, exploring its key themes and poetic devices and creating our own metaphors, similes and personification. Inspired by the poem, the children have even begun writing their own poems based on natural disasters! From sandstorms to tsunamis, every pupil has produced an imaginative poem that captures the power of nature, just like the original. We are now beginning to enhance our oracy skills by practising and performing our poems and we can’t wait to share the outcomes with parents at our upcoming Poetry Performance.

In Maths, Year 5 has been strengthening their understanding of place value, while also exploring Roman numerals and beginning to work with negative numbers. It has been wonderful to see the children approach these challenges with determination and enthusiasm, especially as we begin to work on problem solving using our Give, Gap and Goal method.

Our new History topic has also been a real highlight for the year group. The cohort have been particularly enjoying learning about the Wars of the Roses, studying different historical sources to piece together their usefulness and reliability. The children have shown great curiosity and are especially eager to learn more about the Battle of Bosworth and the fascinating story of Richard III.

It has been an exciting start to the year, and we are so proud of the effort, creativity, and enthusiasm Year 5 have shown in all areas of their learning. We can’t wait to see what they achieve next!
