V.E. Day blog:

Today pupils and staff came together to commemorate VE Day with a joyful and reflective celebration that brought history to life.

The day began with a moving assembly led by the Year 6 children, who shared the story of Victory in Europe Day — a momentous occasion marking the end of World War II in Europe. Through readings, acting and thoughtful presentations, they helped the whole school community understand the significance of May 8th, 1945, and honour the sacrifices made by those who lived through wartime.

Following the assembly, the children enjoyed a picnic-style lunch outdoors. With Union Jack bunting and flags flying high, the playground was transformed into a scene reminiscent of 1940s street parties. Sandwiches, snacks, and laughter were shared under the sunshine, capturing the spirit of celebration that echoed across Britain 80 years ago.

Adding to the immersive experience, children across the school dressed up in WWII-themed outfits. From evacuees and land girls to soldiers and nurses, their costumes added colour and authenticity to the day, sparking curiosity and conversation about the lives of people during the war.

As part of the day’s learning, every class also created a piece of work inspired by VE Day. Whether it was writing heartfelt letters from the perspective of returning soldiers, creating wartime propaganda posters, or crafting doves of peace, the children's creativity and empathy shone through in each piece.

Holy Family’s VE Day celebration was not just a chance to dress up and enjoy a picnic — it was a powerful, hands-on learning experience that brought history into the hearts and minds of every child.
