Year 1 blog
Year 1 have had a very enjoyable half term. Read below to find out what we have been learning!
Writing
In Writing, the children have really enjoyed our writing units based on the book ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson. We started the term with an unexpected visit. Someone had been in our classroom and made a mess. We used our inference skills and worked out that it was The Gruffalo! We then created wanted posters for The Gruffalo. We have now started our second writing unit where we are retelling the story of The Gruffalo. We have had great fun writing this half term!
Maths
In Maths, Year 1 started the half term by looking at place value of numbers to 20. They have enjoyed finding one less and one more of numbers and comparing numbers using the <, > and = signs. They have also focussed on addition of numbers to 20 by counting on, learning their number bonds to 10 and 20 and doubling numbers. Year 1 will finish this half term by learning about subtraction. They will learn to subtract using their number bonds, subtract by counting backwards and to subtract by finding the difference.
Geography
This half term Year 1 have been learning about Kenya. They have learnt about the weather, climate and considered what they would need to pack if they were going to visit. Year 1 have also learnt about the Masai tribe and their traditional ways of living. This was linked to some of their Guided Reading lessons where they read the book 'Masai and I' and explored how different our lives are to the people who live in this tribe. Year 1 will finish this Geography topic by comparing Masai tribe life to people that live in Nairobi.
DT
Year 1 have been learning about moving mechanisms in DT this half term. They looked at cards and books that had moving parts - flaps, pop ups and parts that slide and then enjoyed exploring how to make these themselves. With this knowledge, the children were able to design their own moving mechanisms. They enjoyed making these very much and were able to share what they had made, how easy or difficult it had been and reflect on what they would change next time. Year 1 will finish this unit by putting those adaptations into place and evaluating their finished pieces.
