Year 2 blog

Year 2 have had a great start to spring 2, have continued their hard work and wonderful learning, here are some of the exciting things we have been up to so far.

Our Maths learning:
We have been learning all about multiplication and division, exploring different methods to group and share amounts. Over the past year we have been looking at 2s, 5s, and 10 times tables, but during our multiplication unit we explored a range of times tables using arrays. This allows us to solve more complex multiplication calculations, which can also be applied to our problem-solving calculations.

Our Writing learning:
We have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about different types of mythical beasts, using this as a stimulus, we were able to create our own dangerous or mythical beast to refer to throughout our writing journey. To begin our journey, we read a lot about mythical beasts in a booklet at home, we enjoyed sharing our learning with our families! Using our knowledge of the creatures, we then built our own, which are proudly displayed in our classrooms. We began to build a toolkit for a non- non-chronological report, thinking about the different vocabulary we could use to describe our beasts.
One of our favourite parts of our toolkit has been “The rule of 3” and now we can spot this authorial technique in other pieces of writing. We have really enjoyed writing our non-chronological report and challenging ourselves to write in a completely new genre.

Our History learning:
We had a fantastic time during the week learning all about Florence Nightingale. We have been able to compare the state of hospitals from 1854 to hospitals today and identify the changes that Florence Nightingale inspired. Not only that, but we have also considered Florence Nightingale as a young child and have been able to identify the impact Florence Nightingale had due to her
upbringing, which led us to make a decision about Florence Nightingale’s key attributes as a nurse. We demonstrated all of this new knowledge by writing a letter from the perspective of Florence Nightingale, thinking about her feelings and the feelings of other people around her.
