Year 5 blog:

Building our love for Reading!

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?  Are you a Tom Gates fan?  Or a Katherine Rundell fan?  Have you read ‘1918’ or ‘The Midnight Guardians’?  Or maybe non-fiction books interest you more?

As Dr. Seuss says: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”  This week, Year 5 went on a trip to Lordshill Library to find out all about how it works. Through exploring the children’s section of the library, their interest in children’s literature has developed and many children returned to school with a new book they were interested in reading.  We can’t wait to find out what they have enjoyed about their books and we know how excited they are to take their parents there too!

Four or less, let it rest, five or more, let it soar!

In maths, we have conquered rounding! The children began by recalling their previously learnt rounding skills before applying them to more challenging rounding problems using larger numbers. Could you solve this problem?  Our Year 5 children can!

The difference between two 5-digit numbers is 200

When each number is rounded to the nearest 100,000, the difference between them is 100,000

What could the two numbers be?

Find all the possible answers.

History is written by the victors!

Taking on the role of one of the two families that claimed the right to the throne—the House of York (represented by a white rose) and the House of Lancaster (represented by a red rose) - the children reinacted ‘The Battle of Bosworth’. Through their research and studying of different historical sources, the children learnt the valuable lesson of gathering as much evidence as possible, as not all historical sources can be trusted. This understanding will be particularly significant when the children use evidence to form an opinion on a significant historical event – ‘The Princes in the Tower’, which links to their reading of ‘The Princes in the Tower: An Unsolved Mystery’ in their Reading sessions.

We have had a really positive start to Year 5 and cannot wait to see the children flourish over the rest of the half term!
