Year 3 blog:
Art
This term the children have been exploring printmaking. We started the unit by looking at the designs of William Morris and explored how he often took his inspiration from nature. The children then looked at some patterns in nature to use as their starting point to create a design. They experimented with repeating patterns and rotating them to create more intricate designs. The children were then ready to explore printmaking techniques using paints, tiles and rollers to create their beautiful final designs.
Writing
This term, the children have explored a book called 'World Burn Down' , a survival story set in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Using this as a stimulus, children created their own survival stories, filled with tension, where their main characters had to fight to survive the dangers of the Amazon and devastating forest fires. We are now exploring and researching the Amazon rainforest in more depth, why it is so significant, how it is being damaged and what we can do to help. Children have been investigating the key features of a non chronological report such as a formal tone along with key facts in order to produce credible and informative reports. We are anticipating some truly wonderful reports as this has become a matter close to the hearts of many of our pupils, who have now become very knowledgeable on all things Amazon and its vital importance.
Maths
Our latest topic in Maths has been all about money. The children have been building on their skills from Year 2 in recognising different coins and notes and creating different amounts. They have really enjoyed using coins to calculate how much they would need to buy something. They have been very successful in representing amounts of money in different ways. The next step in their journey has been for them to add and subtract different amounts of money. They have had to recall their knowledge of column subtraction and addition. Our next topic will be all about time!
Science
This term, Year 3 have become plant doctors, learning all about what plants need to survive. They have been shown different plants which are not surviving very well and tasked with identifying what is wrong with them based on their symptoms. Over the half term, they have enjoyed conducting an investigation using tomato plants to find out what happens when you remove a vital element that they need to survive. This week, through scientific testing, Year 3 have proved that most plants need regular watering, sunlight and nutrients.
