Year 2 blog:

Year 2 Dive into the Rainforest!

Last half term, Year 2 absolutely loved learning all about tropical rainforests. We started by discovering the amazing animals that call the rainforest home, from brightly coloured parrots and tree frogs to stealthy jaguars and swinging spider monkeys. The children enjoyed imagining what it might be like to stand deep inside a rainforest; hearing the pitter patter of rainfall on giant leaves, the calls of hidden birds and the rustle of creatures moving through the undergrowth.

We then explored the four layers of the rainforest in more detail; the forest floor, the understory, the canopy and finally the emergent layer. We explored which of the animals they may find in each layer and why. Do you know what percentage of sunlight actually reaches the forest floor? See if your child can tell you!

To complete our learning journey, Year 2 compared tropical rainforests with temperate rainforests, using the Amazon Rainforest and Kielder Forest in the UK as examples. The children were brilliant at spotting similarities and differences in climate, wildlife, and plant life. They have become true rainforest experts!
