Year 4 blog:
Hello from Year 4!
We’ve got some fantastic things lined up and we can’t wait to share what we’ll be doing together! Get ready for some exciting adventures and new discoveries.
Writing Nature Poems: A Creative Adventure
As part of our English studies, our Year 4 children have been exploring the beauty of nature through poetry. We have been learning to observe the world around us closely, using vivid imagery and sensory language to bring our poems to life. From describing the rustling of leaves to the gentle hum of bees, the children have been practicing how to use similes, metaphors and personification to add depth and creativity to their poems. The children have chosen either an animal, natural object or season to represent with their poem. These nature-inspired poems have not only allowed the children to develop their writing skills but also helped them foster a deeper connection with the natural world.
The next topic we’ll be diving into is diary entries. But here’s the twist – instead of writing from their own point of view, they are going to write diary entries from the perspective of a familiar character. They will have the chance to get creative and think about what your character might be feeling, seeing and experiencing. It’s going to be so much fun and we will use descriptive language to really bring our characters to life!
Equivalent Fractions, Mixed Numbers, and Improper Fractions
In maths, we are going to be tackling fractions. We will look at equivalent fractions, which are different fractions that actually represent the same amount, like 1/2 being the same as 2/4. We will also cover mixed numbers (fractions that include a whole number, like 1 ½) and improper fractions (fractions where the numerator is larger than the denominator, like 5/4). I know fractions can seem tricky at first, but with lots of practice and fun activities, the children will be fraction experts in no time!
Rivers and the Water Cycle
We are also going to explore rivers and the water cycle. We will learn how rivers start in the mountains and travel across the land, shaping the earth as they go. We will also discover the amazing journey of water as it moves through the water cycle – from evaporation to condensation to rainfall. It is a fascinating process that affects everything around us and I know the children will love learning about it. This will feed into our Water Day next week!
Bug Hotels
And finally, we are going to get our hands dirty by building bug hotels! You will be creating little homes for insects in the garden or classroom. It is a great way to learn more about the important creatures that help our environment and see how we can make a difference by looking after them.
We are so excited for all the fun and learning ahead! It is going to be a busy term, full of creativity, exploration and discovery. We cannot wait to get started with all of you! Please bring in any items that could be used to make these.
